Tina, 65, came to Indianapolis from South Bend for six weeks of radiation therapy for rectal cancer. Staying at a relative’s house, she had no place to sleep but the floor. After a week or so, the situation began to take a huge physical and emotional toll. Tina came into her doctor appointment one morning crying.
“I was so exhausted,” Tina told us, “I didn’t feel like I could go on.”
She had lost hope.
Tina’s physician immediately called a social worker who made a referral to Fair Haven, where there was an opening several days later.
“When I got the call, I just started crying. It was truly an answer to a desperate prayer.”
After moving in, Tina had a whole new outlook. She felt better and got stronger to endure her treatments. And she enjoyed the visits and phone calls from her new friends at Fair Haven.
“Without the apartment, I couldn’t have completed my radiation treatments,” Tina told us. “I can’t tell you how much it meant to me. It gave me hope.”
